See how we updated a client’s family room from dark and heavy to light and cozy.
Last year, I had the privilege of working with a very sweet family in updating their family room. My clients relocated from another state and found a home they wanted to settle down with their two precious girls. Since the home is traditional, we kept the style consistent but brightened up the space by changing a few things. See how we updated this client’s family from dark and heavy to light and cozy.
BEFORE
The previous color was a greenish beige color. Combined with the flooring, the color on the walls made the entire room look and feel dark and outdated. I recommended going white and also removing the valence boxes above the windows. The valence boxes with the maroon drapes overwhelmed the windows. The ceiling is high but again, the boxes made the room feel small and tired .
AFTER
Just painting and removing the heavy boxes made a world of a difference. They kept their original cream colored leather couches so I sourced a new rug, throw pillows, coffee table and other decorative items.
The beautiful painting above the mantel was done by the owner’s mother. It holds sentimental value and it was the main piece that I used to come up with the overall color palette for this space. The use of blues throughout the room adds a nice punch of color but it also invokes a calm vibe. They have two small active girls so peaceful vibes are always welcomed.
A basket holds extra pillows and a blanket. I always have extra throws in my family room because we are always snuggling up with them on the couch. I added some faux greenery in the tall vase. If you can’t use real, always opt for plants that look as authentic as possible.
The homeowners love real plants so I made sure to add those into this space. Plants add so much life and they help purify the air so they really have a lot of benefits.
Family rooms typically are multi-functional. Daily, it serves as a place to rest and unwind. It also serves as a place where guests gather, kids play and watch tv. When decorating for families, I always think of how a piece can add function to that space.
The glass coffee table with brass detailing has a nice sleek design and glass always help to create an airy feeling. We tried a wooden table before this one, but the owner loved that the beautiful rug could really shine. Plus, the oval design is great for families with young kids since there are no sharp corners.
I mixed pillows and throws working with the pretty colors off the rug.
Before
After
I styled the shelves with decor and photographs that Maggie and Bernie already had. The center was left empty for a television.
The snake plant on the floor is real but the one on the shelf is faux. If you’re looking for an easy house plant, snake plants are very easy to take care of and low maintenance.
I never tire of styling shelves.
Now you can see just large that mantel is in comparison to me. It’s actually quite large and creates a natural focal point in the room. The sheer navy curtains add color and are so much lighter than the previous maroon drapes.
Here’s a final look at the BEFORE and AFTER.
What do you think about this family room update? I love working with families to help create functional and beautiful spaces so that they can truly be at home.
