Step by Step Mixed Floral Arrangement

March 2, 2017

This simple step by step mixed floral arrangement will help you create that beautiful one a kind centerpiece.

Today, I’m sharing a step by step mixed floral arrangement post so that you can easily create your own floral masterpiece. A few days ago, I shared the steps on my Instagram stories and decided I would also share them on the blog.

My in laws owned and operated their own flower shop for many years. In those years, I managed to pick up a few tips since I helped them during all of the busy holidays. My MIL taught me how to prolong the life of hydrangeas and I learned how to create arrangements by watching the designers put together all sorts of orders. If you’ve ever wanted to create a floral arrangement but didn’t know where to start, here are some simple steps to help you! *Disclaimer: I’m by no means an a floral expert but this is just how I do it!

STEP 1: Fill your vase with water and empty the packet of flower food. The food disinfects any germs in the water that can cause the flowers to rot.

Step 2: Add foliage or leatherleaf as your greenery. Here, I used eucalyptus I bought from Trader Joes. Each bundle is only $2.99 and lasts a long time.

Some of the greenery naturally droops so I let them hang this way.

Step 3: Add the Big Guns. This is where you want to add your tallest flowers that have the most impact. Hydrangeas, sunflowers and lilies are examples of tall, large flowers. Make sure your tallest flower is at least double the height of the vase and placed in the center. Cut the other floral stems so they stagger like the photo below. I like to measure by making each stem stand next to the vase. This avoids the mistake of cutting the stems too short.

You could also use irises, alstroemeria, stock, carnations, daises etc. These flowers help to fill in the gaps in the arrangement. The choices are endless! This is also a great way to add color from varieties of flowers. Doesn’t that look so much better?

I also added alstroemeria to the arrangement and these last up to 3 weeks. If your arrangement is going to be seen all around like a centerpiece, just turn it around and add the flowers on both sides so it looks balanced.

Step 5: Add final touches of mini fillers like wax flowers, baby’s breath, statice, etc. I left this step out of my arrangement because I loved the way it looked without this particular step. Make sure you change out the water every few days and give the ends a trim when needed.

What do you think? I love the hanging foliage on the side and the pretty pastel colors remind me that Spring is near! Btw, all of these flowers were bought from the grocery store. You can buy great quality flowers from your local store and make them look like an expensive arrangement.

It takes a little practice but it’s a lot easier than you think especially given these simple steps. Go love on someone by gifting them an arrangement you put together. You will be guaranteed to bring joy to that person. While you’re at it, make one for yourself too!

Be sure to pin this for later!

This turned out so pretty! I love it when there’s texture and a little droopiness to an arrangement.

I miss her big giant hugs, random crazy dance moves, impromptu jams on the piano, base guitar, harmonica, and ukulele. It’s a mix of excitement, happiness and sadness and I’m letting myself feel it all. I catch myself getting weepy throughout the day but I feel a deep sense of gratitude for this new season and what she’ll get to experience.
Aside from the rug, the girls styled their space and it turned out so cute. I love that she’s rooming with her friend from 1st grade. How can my child be in college?!😭😢
