ORC: Mom’s Bedroom Week 1

April 5, 2018

Mom’s bedroom makeover starts now!

It’s week 1 of the One Room Challenge and I’ll be sharing about my mom’s bedroom makeover. If you’ve been here for a while, you’ll know that this is my 4th time participating in this fun challenge. I love that this challenge pushes me to complete a space in less than 6 weeks. The pressure gives me just what I need to finish off a space. Today, I’m sharing some Before photos of my mom’s current bedroom. Her 60th birthday is coming up in June and I thought it would be a nice gift from me and my siblings to give her a bedroom a nice refresh.

Before I share some photos and plan of action, I think it’s important to share a little backstory of my family. I come from South Korean immigrant parents. When I was 5, my parents decided to immigrate to the US with very little cash and a few pieces of luggage. My dad dreamed of owning his own business and taking his family to this place that was called the land of opportunity. My parents worked hard to build their business, send all 4 kids to college and assimilate to a completely new culture and language as best as they can. I still remember when I was in elementary school, my little sister and I were cared for by my grandma because my parents were working at least 60-80 hours a week. They worked their butts off to save money to start their own business. When my oldest, Jules started Kindergarten, my mom teared up because she said it reminded her of when I started Kindergarten. I didn’t know a lick of English and mom was so heartbroken over that fact. I laughed and told her I didn’t remember much about that time since I was still young but I can imagine her heart especially now that I have children of my own.

Before we moved into our current home, we lived in a townhouse for almost 10 years. We kept the townhouse and my parents have been living in it ever since we moved. I have to say they are pretty good tenants. One of my regrets was never updating our home while we lived in it. But I want to slowly start updating parts of their home so that they can enjoy it. I thought this bedroom would be a good start.

My parents have been using the same furniture that I used when growing up. Can you believe it? They have never updated it! My dad is very frugal and although it’s in decent shape, it’s seriously outdated. You can imagine my mom is very excited about this makeover.

The first thing I’ll be doing is giving the walls a fresh coat of white paint. The best part of painting the walls white is it will give it a nice clean slate and I don’t have to use any tape! I can just cut since it will be close enough in color to the trim.

I put together a design board so that I could at least have some sort of plan for the room. My mom prefers a feminine style so I’m going to install this beautiful floral wallpaper provided by Graham and Brown and add some touches of pink. I’m not totally set on the other pieces but I do want to incorporate some black because it looks so chic and adds a nice modern, classic touch.

Thanks for following along and wish me luck!! You can follow along on my Instagram stories where I’ll be sharing more updates.
