An Open Concept Breakfast Area

December 23, 2018

See how our open concept breakfast area received a makeover combining both style and function.

This post is sponsored by Home Depot but all thoughts, styling and cheesy grins are my own. The space in our kitchen and breakfast area is where so much life happens. We eat, do homework, talk about our day, host gatherings, pray, cook and spend most of our time here together. We have spontaneous weeknight dinners with neighbors and have people constantly in and out of this main space which is the heart of our home. Recently, our open concept breakfast area received a makeover with Home Depot and I’m so excited to share it with you.

Since we have an open floor plan, the kitchen is one long open space with both the breakfast area and family room. I like to keep this entire space a nice combination of style and function since it’s used the most. When Home Depot asked me to partner with them on getting our home ready for the holidays, I was totally on board. By now, you already know my love for Home Depot is strong especially since I love all things DIY and home improvement. But I was so surprised to see their diverse online selection of home décor and furnishings.

I just shared my guest room makeover the other day and it’s all ready for my first guests which will be my sister’s family this week. While getting that room ready, I was also busy working on our breakfast area transformation. I was able to create a new breakfast area off our kitchen and our family is in love with the new space.

I started off with the design by thinking about what I wanted for this space. Our previous table was a garage sale find and fit 6 people. That table is now moved into my office. I knew I wanted a larger table since the space could accommodate it.  Design wise, I also really desired to combine some styles together to keep it interesting but still casual. We have 3 kids and we also have foster children that come in and out of our home so I had to look for products that fit my aesthetic but could handle messes, dings and stains. We also have 3 nephews who live next door so understandably, it had to withstand a LOT of use.

I’m most excited about the large modern industrial teak table. This table is huge and heavy, ya’ll.  It generously fits 10 people comfortably and has the most beautiful warm wood color. Now, we can have more people gathered around the table. This teak wood is also easy to clean, repels moisture and is super low maintenance. These are all characteristics that make this table even more amazing.

I also chose the long matching bench. I chose one bench but you could totally do a bench on both sides. The best part is that it slides and tucks nicely under the table creating a seamless and clean look. When tucked under the table, it really opens up the space. I especially like how the bench doesn’t obstruct the view of the sofa table behind it.

I decided to mix it up with some unique rattan chairs at the end and their shape drew me to the design. I love the curved shape and I chose gray ones to add a nice contrast to the industrial table. Wood and rattan look so good together and the combination of textures  adds a nice organic element to the space.

I also chose 4 of these gorgeous black velvet chairs. The tapered gold legs are my favorite part and these come in some other beautiful colors as well. I had a hard time choosing the color because they are all so good. These chairs are so comfortable and I chose to have cushioned chairs on one side because my mom can’t sit on hard surfaces too long.

The velvet chairs add some drama and again is a nice contrast with the industrial style table and bench. If you don’t like velvet, they also carry a linen version and faux leather ones that are all great choices.

Tablescapes are my jam and these gorgeous Japanese inspired dishes are also from Home Depot. Home Depot now carries a huge assortment of dishware.

The quality is beautiful and I love that I can use these dishes all year round.

They would also be perfect for mix and matching.

The 3 sculpted ceramic vases come as a set and are perfect for holding one simple faux stem. I like to keep any type of centerpieces or décor on the shorter side so that it doesn’t hinder anyone’s view while eating and conversing across the table.

When working with open floor plans, rugs are a great way to help separate and distinguish spaces from each other. This neutral jute rug has a nice pattern that adds some visual interest yet subtle enough so that still acts as a nice foundation.

When the velvet chairs first arrived, Emmy sat on it and said, “mama, these are soooo comfy!” She’s absolutely right. They are sooo comfy.

I love that everything is easy to clean and works well with all of the furniture. I really love how this space came together!

I imagine a LOT of meals being shared on this table.

I added one of my scarves as a runner and love the soft texture it adds to the table.

I love how this new breakfast area allows us to live freely without sacrificing style.

What’s your favorite part of this room? To tell you the truth, I can’t choose one. I really do love it all.

A huge thanks to Home Depot for partnering with me on this incredible makeover and helping to maximize our breakfast area so that more people can gather here all together.

Thanks so much for reading, friends! I hope you have a Merry Christmas and Happy Holidays. xoxo,
