Modern Farmhouse Plate Rack

August 29, 2018

This DIY modern farmhouse plate rack is our newest addition to the kitchen.

Earlier this year, I had a vision for this narrow piece of wall in between my pantry cabinets and ovens. I really wanted to build a modern farmhouse plate rack for this wall. I knew it had to be narrow and it couldn’t stick out too much because of the cabinetry. I thought about it for a while and when Jimmy and I finally had a free Saturday, we tackled this project.

EDIT* You can find the complete build tutorial here on this post.

This is the only wall in our kitchen because it’s filled with cabinets on all sides. Through the years on that narrow piece of real estate, we created a DIY chalkboard, replaced it with picture frames and then swapped those out for these simple wooden boards. I still kept coming back to the plate rack idea. I knew I didn’t want a traditional farmhouse design but wanted to add a contemporary kick to it. Here’s what we created.

Once we drew up the plan, we ran to Home Depot and bought some wood pieces. We spent around $30 on the whole project because I already had leftover paint and beadboard wallpaper from the mud area project a few years back. We used our saw to cut all the the pieces and used the nail gun for most of this project.

I wasn’t planning on posting a full tutorial for this but if you really want one, I can try to explain more in depth how we came up with our plan and built this pretty lil thing.

I’m such a sucker for pretty plates and this is the perfect area to display and change them out. It’s gonna be a fun area to style every now and then. You know me. I can’t ever leave anything alone.

In my head, I envisioned using some faux leather accents. I think it gives it a nice modern contrast and a little edge. Most plate racks have an extra piece of wood there but I knew the camel colored leather would be the perfect detail to this plate rack.

Sometimes, you have a vision in your head but you’re scared to execute it because you’re afraid of it being a failure. I went into thinking if it turned out terrible, at least now I’d know for sure and stop thinking about this idea.

Even if it was a failure, it’s not really a big deal. You never know unless you try and it could turn out even better than you envisioned it.
