It’s totally possible to refresh or transform a bedroom on a budget.
Hey guys! For the past couple of weeks, I’ve slowly been working on JJ’s room. For his birthday this year, I decided to give his room a makeover. We skipped having a party for him and he’s been asking me to decorate his room for a while. Sadly, his room was the only one I never decorated. #poormiddlechild Anyways, the room was a hodge podge of mixed furniture and there was always stuff everywhere. A few months ago, I made a pinterest board to gather some ideas. Before I get to the reveal, let me show you what the room looked like BEFORE.
This is what it looked like upon entering.
He has a trundle bed so the bottom slides out from under the bed. You can pop it up to make a king size bed or keep it low like a mini bunk bed. Look at the crooked frame and crooked wooden letters! Haha, I’m totally keeping it real here.
Can you believe that old dresser is from Jimmy’s grandmother?!! So, it’s actually JJ’s great grandmother’s antique dresser! It’s solid wood but as you can see, it was super outdated. My budget for the makeover was $100. I love giving myself a challenge especially on a budget. I didn’t want to paint the room because it was already a neutral color and if the kids ever want to switch rooms in the future, the paint won’t be an issue. Remember what that clock looks like up there because it also went through a mini transformation. Are you ready for the AFTER???
I went with a nautical coastal theme.
We moved the bed against the wall.
I brought in some stuff around the house like the lamp and chalkboard. The lockers were only $6 at a garage sale! So cute, right? It even came with a red shelf but that didn’t work out in the room.
I bought the boat oar from the antique market the other week. I repainted it white and added stripes. I put up thrifted frames with an old vintage map that I cut.
I may or may not have gotten a few glue gun burns making that “J” up there!
JJ already had this blue trunk in his room so it went perfectly with the nautical decor.
A bunch of his legos are stored in boxes in the shelf. He loves his legos! The blue chest holds a bunch of hand me down clothes from my friend Kelly.
Hey there, granny dresser! My oh my, you look different! I decided to do something different with the handles. I went with more bold color too. JJ loves blue so it fits him perfectly. I originally wanted rope handles on the dresser but the holes were too small so I had to improvise. I actually love the plaid flannel handles. They bring in some originality and whimsy to the room.
I told you even the clock had a mini transformation.
When JJ saw me working on the room, he would come hug me and say, “you’re the best mom ever!” He was so excited!
It’s safe to say he loves it! Next week, I’ll break down all the DIY that went down in this room. I’ll offer lots of tips on how to transform an entire room on a budget. I stayed under my budget of $100!! I’ll also share my total cost breakdown next week. I hope this encourages you that a room makeover doesn’t have to be expensive if you’re willing to do a little DIY and smart shopping.
Have a great day!

that is amazing!! i wish i could do a transformation here but a) not going to be here that long haha and b) too much stuff accumulated in the past 20 years of my life. I’d be tired just from moving everything out. Love the idea and the final result!
