Evolution of a Dining Room

May 19, 2020

Dramatic evolution of a dining room

Yesterday’s post was all about painting the entire dining room from floor to ceiling. I shared some tips on how to paint baseboards along with photos of where we’re currently at in our dining room transformation. Today, I thought it would be fun to share the many changes of our dining room as it has gone through more changes than any space in our home. Here’s the evolution of a dining room over the years.

When we first moved into our home, this was what it looked like. The dining room is on the left when you enter through the front door.

The walls were burgundy and we painted it gray the day we closed on our home.

Aside from a couple of rooms, we have repainted every space in our home. One of the bedrooms and bathrooms was neon green when we moved in and that immediately had to be rectified.

We have lived in our home for almost 8 years and it’s fun to see how much my design has changed in the span of that time. Since we moved from a 1200 sq foot townhome to a 3700 home, we had a lot of empty spaces for the first few years. We bought second-hand furniture like this dining set and I chalk painted it. This is when I loved farmhouse decor and was just starting to get into interior design.

Before:

After a little bit of time, I converted the dining room into my office. I used the dining table as my desk and brought in the white bookcases.

And then, it became a dining room again. The bright pink rug added a fun pop of color and I won that pendant light from Lighting Design in an Instagram giveaway. I eventually worked with Lighting Design Company for at least 9 design projects.

I bought this table and chairs from a friend and reupholstered and painted this set. It was really gross and heavily banged up but with some elbow grease, it was fully revived.

I painted the stone console table which made the space feel brighter and ethereal. Then, I craved drama!

I partnered with Smith-Honig for Christmas and installed this peel and stick wallpaper. It was moody, rich, and really stunning. I loved it so much that when I removed it, I was able to salvage it and install it in Emmy’s bedroom.

Then, I wanted to go black and have even more drama! This is after I removed the wallpaper. I was seeing a vision for something more minimal and clean.

I first painted just above the chair rail. I wasn’t bold enough to do the molding below it. I also added a skinny line on the trey ceiling.

l loved the richness of the black so much that I knew I had to paint the chair rail and molding.

See how good that looks? It gave me enough courage to decide that the whole room needed to go black including the ceiling and the base trim. So this is where we are now. It’s definitely my favorite out of all the changes. The walls are striking and the perfect backdrop for everything in it. I can’t wait to show you the full reveal. I’m so stinking excited!

If you’ve been with me from the beginning, you’ll remember a lot of these images.

As always, thanks for following along!

xoxo,
