A newly painted desk adds a beautiful and functional piece for Jules’ bedroom.
Can you believe I’ve owned this black desk for 17 years? I originally bought it from Pier 1 Imports and it has been moved around in our old townhouse and current home. It has been living in Jules’ room but she wasn’t too in love with the red glazed edges or black distressed paint. She had asked to repaint it a while back and since we’re running out of things to do, I told her to go to town with the paintbrush. Here’s how she got her newly painted desk.
Jules used Velvet Finishes paint in Opulent. I love using this paint for furniture as it doesn’t need any sanding or priming. It also dries fairly quickly. Make sure to give your furniture a good dusting and cleaning prior to painting. I used this same color paint on an old console table and bed for the guest room makeover a few years ago.
I love that Jules has her own set of painting clothes. 🙂 She gave the desk two light coats of paint. Be sure to wait the appropriate time between coats. After it’s completely dried, she took a clean cloth and rubbed on the Velvet Finishes Protect coat.
AFTER!!
I even created a little gallery wall right above her desk.
She changed out the knobs for one of our old cabinet ones we had lying around.
This is a real tone on tone moment happening here. I actually liked the black but I’m giving her more freedom to decorate her room the way she wants. Using a desk that doubles as a nightstand is great for small spaces. I did this for my brother’s old NY studio apartment.
I think the room has come together pretty nicely. It feels quite tranquil in here. She’s much more of a minimalist so she prefers a clean and simple look. I’m just thankful she keeps her room clean which I know is not the norm for teenagers.
I recently gave that dresser on the right a one hour makeover and you can find that post here.
Here are some sources for this bedroom. I’m sorry I don’t have the paint name for the walls because I painted it before I started this blog!
