Today, I wanted to do something a little different and put the spotlight on my main squeeze. No, it’s not our anniversary but this sweet man of mine deserves to be celebrated. Jimmy and I have been married 13.5 years but we’ve been together for over 20. Isn’t that crazy? I think that’s crazy. We met in the summer of 1996 when I was just shy of turning 17 and he was 18. He was getting ready to embark on his journey to start college at the University of Michigan. I was about to be a junior in high school. We met at a church retreat that summer where my first impression of him was of a really kind, super outgoing, gentle and goofy guy. He was the nicest guy I had ever met with the biggest smile and laughter that would light up a room. Till this day, he has never once raised his voice at me! Since he didn’t want to be a total creeper, he called me after that retreat to try to plan a going away lunch for a friend who was moving out of state. I know. Slick guy. That was the start of him calling me EVERY. SINGLE. DAY for the rest of the summer. My parents were all, “who is this strange dude calling 247?” Remember, this was in a time of no cell phones, just home lines. Man, I’m dating myself! Fortunately, my parents fell in love with him immediately.
It’s always fun to remember our early days of dating and even marriage. He is undoubtedly my biggest cheerleader, prayer warrior and best friend. I thank God for the gift that he is to me and our children. This last year was particularly challenging due to a series of uncontrollable circumstances with his work, our families and other crazy things that life throws your way. In the midst of the crazy, I’m thankful that he’s always by by side speaking words of truth over me, being the best sounding board and always giving me the best back scratches. Life is hard but it’s so much sweeter, joyful and fun with him. Plus, the guy not only puts up with all of my DIY shenanigans, he often joins me!
When Jord Watches reached out to me regarding their wooden watches, I was ecstatic and decided to gift my hubby with it. I LOVE their unique watches because they are made from wood. I had seen a number of people wearing them prior to receiving one. It’s not only beautifully made, it’s extremely light, durable and versatile.
Jimmy isn’t really an accessories guy because of his sensitive skin. #darneczema! When I gifted him the watch, he loved how comfortable it was and best of all, it didn’t irritate his skin. #win!
I chose the Frankie in the zebrawood and navy because Jimmy is the biggest Michigan Wolverines fan and blue is his favorite color. The timing was perfect with college football starting this week. My favorite part is the large watch face made with sapphire glass crystal so it’s completely scratch resistant. You can find more designs here.
I think it looks so good on him! I love that it can be a women’s or men’s watch. I may or may not borrow it sometime soon. It even fits in with the aesthetic of my home decor.
I just finished studying James with my small group and I love these verses so much. They remind me of Jimmy’s character. When convicted, he’s not afraid to speak up with boldness, gentleness and so much wisdom.
But the wisdom from above is first of all pure. It is also peace loving, gentle at all times, and willing to yield to others. It is full of mercy and the fruit of good deeds. It shows no favoritism and is always sincere. And those who are peacemakers will plant seeds of peace and reap a harvest of righteousness. James 3:17
Marriage takes work. As any precious relationship, you have to nurture, care and grow it. If I had to give one piece of marriage advice, it’s this. You can never be too generous by affirming, loving, serving and forgiving your spouse. Oh yeah, and have fun! No matter how hard the day has been, we make sure to laugh and remind each other just how fleeting life is. I want to love my husband in the present and tell him every day what a gift he is to me. Oops, so that was more than one piece of advice. 😀
