DIY Teen Girl Bedroom Makeover

August 6, 2021

With Jules going into high school, we gave her a DIY teen girl bedroom makeover

I can hardly believe our oldest child is in high school! Jules has been wanting to paint her room white for some time now and I finally had a little time to honor her wishes. She loves a good DIY project so we put our heads together to add some fun and flair to her bedroom. Here’s how her teen girl bedroom makeover turned out.

This post is sponsored by Handy Products but all styling, opinions, and cute teen are my own.

We always need to start with the Before so here’s where we started.

BEFORE

I painted this gray room almost 9 years ago when I was pregnant with Emmy. It used to be Emmy’s nursery and then it turned into a guest bedroom and now it’s Jules’ room.

The walls were really beaten up and there were a ton of scuffs and holes everywhere. Plus, Jules removed these lights on the wall that tore off the paint. She learned how to repatch the walls with some dry wall repair and sanded them down for the new coats of paint. This gave us the perfect opportunity to revive these walls.

I gave Jules a lot of creative freedom since this was her bedroom. She wanted to paint her walls white and I recommended adding some trim so that we could add another color and add some personality to her space. She has really gotten into pink so we went to Home Depot to grab our can of white paint and some samples of pink hues.

I recommend adding the samples on the walls and looking at them throughout the day to see how the color and tone changes. The samples from left to right are Behr Sunset Drive, Shiny Kettle, and Coral Cloud. Jules made a final decision after we painted the upper half of the walls white. I had Behr mix it to color match Sherwin Williams’ Pure White in eggshell sheen.

The first coat already made the room look and feel so much brighter! She kept saying she felt like she was living in a gray dungeon. If only she really knew what a dungeon felt like!

Every paint job is made easier because of Handy Products. The Handy Paint Pail is perfect to use when using a paintbrush. It has a comfortable handle so that you have a firm grip on the container AND it has a magnet on the edge of the bucket. This allows you to magnetically attach the paintbrush to the side instead of making it sit inside the paint at the bottom of the bucket. The handy paint pail also has disposable liners that you change out with each project. Between drying times, you can use a cover so that your paint doesn’t go to waste. It’s genius!

Jules chose Sunset Drive for the bottom part of the walls and we agreed on adding some sort of trim to divide the two colors. We picked up some pine lattice that was $1.16/ft.

Originally, I wanted to paint the trim white to match the upper walls but Jules asked if she could keep it raw. It looked pretty against both colors so we left it natural. We used a brad nailer and attached the lattice after using a stud finder.

After everything was done, we switched out the rugs for this one. I love the colors in the rug but just know that it shifts a bit and I think it lays a little better on carpet than on hardwood floors.

I’m glad Jules decided to keep the wood raw. It goes well with all the green in her room.

She is a major plant lover so I gave her this cute little cart to store her favorite plants and books. Isn’t it so cute against the pink and white?

After putting the bed back together, I realized the headboard color didn’t look great. I threw a blanket over the headboard and the colors coordinate well with the rest of the room.

Jules loves her new bedroom and says it makes her feel so happy every time she sees it. I think we achieved our goal!

Instead of having a dresser, she likes having this hanger instead.

Here’s a final look at the Before and After!

We had a great time tackling this room together and now it’s ready for high school Jules! And yes, I chopped my hair off to celebrate this big transition as high school parents.

Thanks to my friends at Handy Products for helping us create a beautiful room together! There’s nothing like a fun mommy and daughter DIY project.

xoxo,

Amazing what paint and a elbow grease yields. The room looks great! Now I’m nervous about eventually ripping off my son’s led lights.
