Design, Ducks and the Kingdom

January 2, 2015

When design, ducks and the kingdom all come together.

This is a post about my revelation where design is every bit a part of God. It came from him first.

The day after Christmas, I took down all the decorations. Even though I love decorating our home for the holidays, I was ready for a fresh, clean slate. I was craving a neutral palette on the mantle so I left the urns, antler, chalkboard art and replaced the rest with some hardback books. I love a good hardback book both for reading and decorating. Some of our favorite books are on display throughout the house. I’m no design expert. Actually, I’m far from it. But I believe you don’t need fancy things to decorate your home. Put up things that represent your family or just things you like. I always like a little bit of whimsy in the home because at our place, we don’t take things too seriously. Make it light hearted and have fun with it!

Take for example these family of ducks.  My in laws had these in their flower shop and gave them to us.They aren’t really my style and I plan on repainting them but they add a little whimsy to our home. Jimmy has really taken a liking to them because it looks like a Min family of ducks. #duckswin

If you know me personally, you know how much I adore Christy Nockels. She is a worship leader, song writer, mom, lover of Jesus and a person who loves making her house a home. In the October issue of Better Homes and Gardens, her family and home graced that particular issue and I was thrilled to read all about it. She also wrote about it on her blog. I love how she eloquently communicated the tension between passion for design and the kingdom. I have often thought about this and I feel like she articulated exactly how I felt regarding this topic. Often times, things can seem so trivial in light of the kingdom. But really, it’s not about what you have but what you’re doing with what you’ve been given. If you have a chance, go and read her thoughts.

I too love design and decor and get really excited about different colors and textures. It really is amazing how vast our God is and how he created beauty himself. Last year, I committed to reading the bible in one year with some other people in our church. I won’t lie cause there were a bunch of places I struggled to stay alert but have you ever read through Exodus?  I mean really read it? There, you will discover the tabernacle, ark, lampstands, table, etc.  Oh man…. I was floored! I mean, I could not believe the descriptions surrounding everything. It talks about everything from size, color, different materials and even clasps, frames, posts. What a designer’s dream. It really is amazing and I was in awe of how descriptive everything was. Our God is the ultimate designer and crafter! #eatyourheartoutHGTV. I’ll just end it with a few verses from Exodus. I mean, I can only imagine those curtains! #striking

Happy Friday, ya’ll and thanks for reading!

xoxo,

yuni

All those who were skilled among the workers made the tabernacle with ten curtains of finely twisted linen and blue, purple and scarlet yarn, with cherubim woven into them by expert hands. All the curtains were the same size—twenty-eight cubits long and four cubits wide. They joined five of the curtains together and did the same with the other five. Then they made loops of blue material along the edge of the end curtain in one set, and the same was done with the end curtain in the other set. They also made fifty loops on one curtain and fifty loops on the end curtain of the other set, with the loops opposite each other.  Then they made fifty gold clasps and used them to fasten the two sets of curtains together so that the tabernacle was a unit. -Exodus 36:8-13-

I learned a new word, Yuni — a little “whimsy”, hehe 🙂 Also loved your insight about Exodus esp. the verses you shared being a designer’s dream. So true. Thanks for sharing this post with us!

I’ve been reading Randy Alcorn’s book on Heaven. He talks extensively about the passage where Christ is preparing a place for us. Agree with you about how God gives us beauty and creativity. Enjoyed your post Yuni! So excited for this chapter in your life. 2015 will be an awesome year!

Love the idea that the people creating the tabernacle were craftsmen! So when are we going to get curtains that are 50×50 cubits with gold rings and pomegranates embroidered?! #OTbetterhomesandgardens.
