Tips for Styling an Alcove
If you live in a traditional home, you may have an awkward niche or nook. We have one in our home in between the main bathroom and guest room. Instead of trying to work against it, I made a few updates to create a cohesive design that worked with the rest of the style of our home. If you have one, here are my tips for styling an alcove.
This is what the alcove used to look like before I painted and wallpapered this area. You can read all about that post here. I cleared everything off so I could refresh this little area.
I have used this peel and stick wallpaper for some time now and have it installed throughout my home. It has held up amazingly well every single time and I love the look of the grasscloth. The niche is painted the same color as our paneled living room wall which is Peppercorn by Sherwin Williams. Instead of trying to hide the niche, try painting it and highlighting the area instead.
I added this pretty oak grain console table with ample storage with the two bamboo shelves. This piece is currently unavailable but this one is similar and just as pretty. A table can be both functional and stylish giving you another fun area to decorate!
I covered some old unattractive books with some pages by using some modge podge. The wooden vase with faux stems was a Homegoods find.
The three black stone vases are the perfect accessory for any table, countertop, or bookshelf. I added a few dried hairstail faux stems to the tallest vase. These stems add a touch of Fall and can be mixed with other faux stems.
I shopped around the house and found this round mirror that used to be in JJ’s room. My design rule to is always shop the house first! You can always replace items later so don’t wait until you feel like it has to be perfect. That’s also the fun part of decorating. Try testing items out to see what looks good and makes you happy with the design.
And yes, the alcove isn’t centered to the wall. #buildershenanigans I did however style the table so that it’s center with the table. What was once an awkward nook is now a little design moment. Every time, I use the bathroom I pause and appreciate this little styled area.
This is how the area ended up as I tried a few other art pieces I had on hand.
Do you have any awkward little nooks or alcoves in your home? I’d love to see it! You can check out my IG reel here to see the fun transformation.
