For JJ’s 11th birthday, he received a Star Wars bedroom!
This project is super special to me. Our middle child, JJ turned 11 this month and I had been talking about gifting him a Star Wars bedroom for quite some time. Thankfully, my friends at Home Depot loved this idea and approved this awesome room makeover. Did you even know that Home Depot sells Star Wars decor? I mean, what don’t they sell? They carry a huge selection of furniture and decor that is available online only at homedepot.com/decor.
This post is sponsored by The Home Depot but all thoughts, and styling and cute 11 year old boy are my own.
To truly appreciate this bedroom transformation, you need to see the BEFORE. We started with yellow walls that were original to the house, the dreaded boob light, and a hodge podge of furniture. To tell you the truth, everything in his old bedroom was either thrifted or a hand me down. It was definitely time to make it more suitable for a growing boy.
The kids helped us paint the walls in Alabaster white and Jimmy and I installed the board and batten wall treatment. Doing those two things alone created a clean and crisp backdrop. Ready for the AFTER? Take it away, JJ!!
TA-DAAAAAA!!!! Look who’s excited to show off his brand new room.
JJ is loving it!! He used to have a trundle bed and we replaced it with this full-size black Dorley metal bed. Home Depot also carries mattresses and I ordered the 10 inch memory foam from Lucid that had great reviews. The SureCool gel-infused foam keeps him cool at night as the mattress has great ventilation.
All of the bedding that you see is also from Home Depot. I chose a simple white organic cotton duvet and striped gray coverlet both from The Company Store. You can find a huge variety of beautiful, comfortable bedding from both The Company Store and Home Decorators collection like the down comforter I used or quilts and duvets. I wanted to keep it minimal on the bed so that JJ could make it every day. I kept it simple with isotonic down alternative bed pillows and a brown polyester lumbar that closely resembles leather.
The ivory drawer chest from The Home Decorator’s Collection has a classic design with simple rings as hardware. It fits perfectly in the narrow wall next to his closet door. A really cool brushed aluminum art called, “The American Dream.” sits on top of the dresser. The colors are more muted and even slightly metallic creating a vintage appearance. You can find so many more art pieces online at homedepot.com/decor.
Since JJ’s room isn’t on the large scale, I wanted to incorporate items that would be super functional and yet look stylish. Using a desk to also function as a nightstand is one of my favorite tricks for small spaces. The mid-century designed desk from the Home Decorator’s Collection has a beautiful stain and complements the 8×10 vintage medallion rug.
Instead of a traditional chair for his desk, I added this black ottoman that comes with a lid. It has a great woven texture that adds an earthy aesthetic to the space. He keeps his extra blankets and stuffed animals in them.
These Star Wars Storm Trooper decals come in a set of 8 and I placed one on the outside of the 11×14 matted black frame. It’s a fun way to incorporate Star Wars without making it look and feel too kiddish. The white iron mesh square canisters are a practical way to add little toys, pencils, or other knick-knacks. JJ keeps some of his legos in them. The dark gray resin LED lamp has a nice modern shape with the hardback drum shade.
The LED fan by the Home Decorator’s Collection was a must for his room. Since this room can get stuffy, it was important to replace the boob light with a fan and this one has such a cool design. The fan blades are reversible and the gold adds a nice modern touch. It’s perfect for our sweaty boy who can control it conveniently with a remote.
I really love how this side came together. On the opposite side of this wall, we added a white bookshelf for his books and fun treasures to be displayed.
This ivory bookshelf is also from the Home Decorator’s Collection and was easy to assemble. There’s a file cabinet in the bottom that makes it also work well for an office. Another black ottoman sits next to the dresser for JJ to utilize as extra storage. It can also serve as a place for his sister or another friend to sit with him at his desk and build legos or trade Pokémon cards. The large Storm Trooper canvas is a cool addition that continues with carrying the Star Wars theme in the bedroom.
Another Star Wars decal was added to the matted black picture frame. You can see some of his recent Lego builds and figurines on his shelf that he likes to display.
One of my favorite pieces is this seagrass decorative basket. It comes in a set of three different sizes and the texture along with the color is so so good. They have a unique shape and are practical in holding other fun items that JJ wants to keep in his bedroom.
The black out velvet drapes are not only stunning but practical in keeping the room dark when needed. The color states ivory but it’s a perfect neutral that appears more like a sandy color. It really adds a nice soft layer to the space.
Doesn’t the board and batten add an interesting dimension to the white walls?
JJ is thrilled with his new space and I couldn’t be happier to help gift it to him. Thanks to my friends at The Home Depot for always trusting my vision and making our dreams come true. You truly can find so many affordable and stylish options for everything in your home that’s available online only at homedepot.com/decor.
