Check out my painted staircase update!!
It’s been nearly 3 months since I painted our staircase. I wanted to give an honest review on the paint and how it’s held up since I painted it black. I hope this painted staircase update provides helpful information if you are on the fence regarding a similar project in your home.
Back in early February, I decided to paint our banister when we took on the hallway makeover with Home Depot. A few simple changes made a dramatic difference in the way our hallway looks and functions. We could not love it more and are so happy with the transformation.
I had wanted to paint our banister for years and finally decided to go for it after experimenting with this particular paint line from DecoArt called Curb Appeal. This exterior paint is originally made for exterior doors. I painted my backsplash with the same paint along with our front door and garage door. All three projects have held up wonderfully.
For the most part, the staircase has held up great. There are a couple of spots where the paint has scratched off and it’s on the newel caps.
Do you know why it scratched off? The kids like to hang their wet towels after their showers on this particular part of the stairs. Long exposure to moisture led to the paint coming off.
I know this because it happened to the bottom newel post too. This is where I hang wet dish towels that need to be taken up to the laundry room. HA! I’m just as guilty!
This newel post on our staircase landing is fine since it never has anything resting on it.
Would I do anything differently?
Knowing what I know now, I might have applied a polyacrylic coat on the newel posts for extra protection. We have also stopped hanging wet towels on the newel posts.
Am I glad I still painted the staircase? You better believe it!! It has held up great everywhere else so I’m still thrilled with the results.
Before
After
One day in the future, I plan on ripping out the carpet on the stairs and installing a runner. You know me and all the countless DIY ideas swimming around my head! I’m trying to keep them contained and indexed for the future since I can only do so much during this quarantine.
My next project is our dining room! I had originally planned on giving my parents’ dining room a makeover but with the whole Covid situation, we had to change it to our home for safety reasons. Unfortunately, my parents’ dining room will have to wait. You can follow along with the process along in my IG stories so be sure to follow along there.
Thanks for reading, friends. I hope you are all doing well and staying healthy. I would love to know. What are some things helping you through this quarantine?
xoxo,
