Here’s a fun example of how to make your room shine with a pop of color.
Earlier this year, I worked on a really sweet family’s house on updating some of the spaces in their home. I shared their modern farmhouse family room a while back but I also had the opportunity to work on their piano room and a few other spaces in their beautiful home. This is an example of how you can make your room shine with a pop of color.
Here’s the BEFORE
Since this den/piano room is an enclosed space near the front of the house, I thought it would be really fun to add a pop of color. When decorating spaces that aren’t used as frequently, I recommend going outside your comfort zone a little and adding something bold. I also think it gives a special first impression if it’s one of the spaces you see first when walking into the home.
My plan of action was the following..
- restyle the shelves and utilize as many existing pieces
- change out the rug for something fun and colorful
- change out the art above the piano
- new lamps
- add plants
AFTER
I love how adding a new rug and art brightened up the space tremendously. I’m so glad Soomy decided to add a fun rug and the round shape breaks up all the straight lines in this den. If I walked into this home for the first time, I’d think, “Man, these people know how to have fun. Check out that awesome rug!” Haha
The botanical prints also complement the pretty subtle bluish/green wall color. The mirror borders add elegance and elevate these simple prints.
I kept the palette with different hues of greens and blues on the shelves. I used some existing frames and decor on the shelves mixed in with new ones. I also took some old frames and created a gallery wall in their powder room.
A sweet wedding photo of Soomy and her dad grace one of the shelves.
I always say that plants add life to a space and I never decorate without them!
What do you think?
Would you add a fun rug like this one to a space in your home? I say, go for it!
Nowadays, rugs are so inexpensive and the choices are endless. I love this one for a great Persian inspired pattern and color. This one is also great for a myriad of interior styles.
If you don’t know where to start, look for rugs that contain your favorite colors. We all lean towards a color spectrum and chances are you probably wear that color quite a bit. Discover your favorite color(s) and begin there.
Here’s a last side by side comparison.

I hope you enjoyed these tips and that it encourages you to have fun with design. If it doesn’t work out, change it out. If we wait till something is perfect, we will never enjoy the space. Enjoy the process and practice loving the space you’re in.

What a huge difference it made bringing in the round rug and plants. The room looks much more homey and inviting. I would take it one step further and bring in four chairs to sit around the rug for piano listening in some cool colors like the rug. Just curious, did you put the settee in another room?
Yuni Min says
Thank you so much, Lorna! The room isn’t quite big enough for that many chairs but I did move the existing chair to the corner but you can’t see it in the photo. I think it would be great to have two sitting chairs on the right side with a little table in the future if the owner wants some seating in there.
