How to paint your bathroom cabinets

April 30, 2020

This post is sponsored by KILZ® Brand but all thoughts, opinions and styling are my own.

Want to know how to paint your bathroom cabinets? Here are the simple steps!

Years ago, I painted my kitchen cabinets. It was a huge DIY project but it gave our kitchen a dramatic transformation. I used KILZ® Primer then and I used it again for my kids’ bathroom cabinets. If you have been looking to update your bathroom, painting your cabinets is the best way to give it an inexpensive and beautiful refresh.

Step 1: Clean your cabinets. Then remove hardware, cabinet doors and drawers.

BEFORE

I wiped down the cabinets with a simple vinegar cleaner. I removed the hardware, cabinet doors and drawers. I left the hinges on.

Step 2: Sand the drawer fronts and cabinet doors.

Be sure to wear a mask because sanding creates a good amount of dust. Sanding removes the gloss so that your primer and paint can adhere better to the wood. Make sure to remove all excess dust with tack cloths.

Step 3: Use KILZ primer and paint a layer onto the cabinet doors and drawers.

I used the multi-surface sealer and stain blocker. This is the same primer I used to successfully paint my kitchen cabinets. This particular primer blocks medium stains including minor water stains, rust, grease, ink, pencil and felt marker. It’s created to help lessen the number of coats of paint required. It also works with oil and water-based paints.

The KILZ primer goes on smooth and is what helps your paint adhere to the cabinets while hiding the previous dark wood tone.

Step 4: Use a deglosser and prime the cabinet.

You can opt to sand the cabinet but I wanted to minimize dust so I used a liquid deglosser.

Then, I primed the cabinet with KILZ primer just as I did the doors and drawers.

Step 5: Paint 2-3 coats using a semi-gloss finish

After the KILZ primer has dried, apply one coat of paint. I recommend using a paint sprayer to achieve a smooth finish but if you don’t have one, use a good quality brush. Be sure to wait for the necessary drying time before you apply a second and third coat. Since I was painting them white, I did a couple of coats with the KILZ Complete Coat® Paint.

Step 6: Install the cabinet doors and drawers

Make sure you wait until everything is fully dried before you put your doors and drawers back.

The bright white looks so much better already. It instantly brightened up the bathroom and made it feel like a different space.

Step 7: (Optional) Change up your hardware

Another way to update your cabinets is by changing the hardware. I chose champagne bronze pulls along with the bar cabinet knobs that feel modern and fresh. To install the handles, I added extra holes on the doors with a drill.

Let’s take a final look at the BEFORE and AFTER.

Isn’t it amazing what a simple paint job can do to a space?

I think JJ is thrilled! I love that a simple DIY project of painting your cabinets can completely elevate the overall look of your bathroom.

Thanks to my friends at KILZ for partnering with me on this project.

xoxo,
