Here’s how to make rustic plate chargers to create the most beautiful tablescape.

The holidays are already upon us! 2020 has been a year where we have had to change our plans, lifestyle, and perspectives. The holidays may look different than years past but that doesn’t mean it can’t be any more special. I still dream of a pretty tablescape for the holidays even if it’s a smaller group of people. Here’s how to make rustic plate chargers for your table using the Bernzomatic TS3500.
RUSTIC PLATE CHARGER
Supplies:
- Bernzomatic TS3500
- Bernzomatic Propane Hand Torch Cylinder
- square pieces of pinewood (I had mine cut 12×12)
- super glue
- sandpaper
- Cerusing wax
- cloth
- wooden half balls
Directions:
I measured the approximate size charger I wanted by placing one of my dinner plates on top. This measured to be about 12×12 inches. If you have the proper tools, you can cut the wood pieces at home. Since I was buying the wood at Home Depot, I just had them cut it at the store.
Take each of those squares and sand them down so that the edges and surfaces are all smooth. Then, glue down the half wooden balls starting at each corner. Go around the whole perimeter of the square until they line all the edges. These wooden half balls are 15mm but you can choose to go bigger if you want.
Using the Bernzomatic TS3500, I torched the edges and surfaces giving it a beautiful rustic finish. This multi-purpose torch is one of my favorites because it is so versatile. I’ve used this torch for so many of my past projects.
Moving slowly ensures all the grains get torched and creates a beautiful rustic look.
Look how pretty!
I finished by rubbing on some cerusing wax to help lighten the color and create a whitewashed appearance. This step adds a nice vintage weathered look while giving it a protective coat. The left image is without the wax. You can see the difference in color. If you love the darker grains, you can choose to add some coats of polyurethane instead.
It adds a nice rustic touch to the plates and is perfect for the holidays. Create a set as a gift to friends and family!
If you make these, I would love to see them. Here’s to creating special memories this year with those who gather around our table.
