5 Tips to Decorating Your Christmas Tree

Here are my 5 tips to decorating your Christmas tree.

Have you started decorating for Christmas yet? The kids and I decided last weekend it was time. They were excited about putting mini trees in their own bedrooms and adding a few decorations around the room. Emmy helped me put up our flocked skinny tree in the dining room and we were quite smitten with how it turned out. It’s definitely an untraditional tree with all the black but I think it has an elegant and sophisticated look to it which coordinates well with our dining room. Here are my tried and true 5 tips to decorating your Christmas tree. Oh yeah, I almost forgot to mention that I’m sharing this post in collaboration with a bunch of blogger friends! 5 Tips to Decorating your Christmas Tree

Tip 1: Fluff the Tree!

When you take the Christmas tree out of the box, it’s usually all folded up. This step is important because you want to fluff every single branch out so that it has a natural and full appearance. You can bend the branches so that it fills the empty spaces in your tree. I recommend wearing these types of gloves or wear regular gloves and long sleeves. Ain’t nobody got time for scratched up arms!

Tip 2: Add Extra Lights

Adding extra lights really make your tree sparkle at night. I love using these small bulb lights that help cast a beautiful glow and create some nice drama along with the pre-strung lights. I used a basket tree skirt at the bottom of my tree but you can also use a blanket, a couple of scarves or place it in a large basket. I’ve even seen DIY wooden crates.

Tip 3: Cut ribbons 2-4 feet long and weave them throughout the tree.

I like to start in the middle and work diagonally. The wired ribbons usually work better since they keep their structure and sit better inside the tree.

Tip 4: Stick with a color palette or theme

I decided to use a bunch of black ornaments and add in a bunch of white elements. It’s a modern glam tree with a black and white theme.

Tip 5: Add faux branches or florals.

This really adds a beautiful element to your tree. You can use any florals but I went with white ones here. I bought these dark greenish black berry branches on clearance last year and they are really stunning. Just take off the branches and stick them throughout the tree. I typically don’t add much to the back of the trees since it’s facing the wall.

The white flowers and branches soften the black and create an elegant result! I used white faux poinsettias throughout the tree.

Here she is all lit up! Emmy was such a great helper and we stood and gazed at our beautiful tree. I also put the larger one up in our family room which I’ll have to share soon!
