It’s time to reveal my modern and classic dining room!
A couple of weeks ago, I decided to paint my dining room walls black. I really wanted a refresh in this space and have it function better for our family. Here’s how my new modern and classic dining room came to be.
First of all, I didn’t want to spend much money on updating this space. Our dining room is on the smaller scale and we had a huge dining room table that I had bought from my friend a while back. I had to completely restore and update it as it was in pretty bad condition. We loved the dining set but it was honestly too big for the room and this area doesn’t get used all that much. Jimmy and I dropped off our dining set at my parent’s home and my mom was happy to have a little change in her space as well.
I have always wanted a round table and thought it would fit the dining space so much better. I found this table on FB marketplace and it was only $50! My sweet husband picked it up on the way home from work one evening.
The table was actually sold in excellent condition but it was not that way upon further inspection at home. That’s another story but I blame myself because you have to inspect these things upon buying second hand items. Even though I have had much experience with this, it’s still a lesson learned!
There was a strip of veneer that was tacked on and fell off while cleaning the table. Since I painted it black, it wasn’t noticeable. However, the leaves don’t attach together because the clips underneath don’t work. I can’t use the leaves because it’s missing a bottom component. 🙁 Even the two halves aren’t completely attached.
Anyways, it’s still usable but definitely far from excellent condition. I sent the seller a message expressing my disappointment and instead of saying sorry, she said she had bought the set from FB from another person and kept only the chairs. She stated it was in excellent condition because the top and legs had no scratches and she had no idea of the other issues. Again, this is my fault but wanted to share this so that you guys can make sure to double check if you buy things second hand.
Okay enough about that. Here’s the AFTER!
I envisioned the new space to function not only as additional seating area for guests while dining but also serve as another little area for games or puzzles for my kids and their friends. It feels so much cozier in here now and not so cramped like before. I can easily move in through this way to go to my office or front door from the kitchen. It’s the perfect area for some tea/coffee with a friend.
Serena and Lily sent me this gorgeous pendant lighting that is actually used outdoors. I love it in here and think oversized lighting adds such a beautiful presence. Do you remember when I saw so many oversized lighting fixtures back at the January market? They totally nailed this design trend!
We have been keeping up with the Advent Calendar and I love it against the black walls.
I added a very inexpensive rug to add just the right amount of color and I love it on top of the other neutral rug. Layering rugs can add dimension and warmth to any space. Remember when I did that for my LaZBoy space that I designed for the competition?
The table came out pretty even with it’s janky and missing parts. 😉
The black wall paint is by Behr called Carbon and it’s my favorite black color.
I was deciding between painting the ceiling black or leaving it and instead went for adding a little black detail trim. I love it.
I don’t have another set of 4 chairs except in the breakfast area so I mixed two pairs in from around the house and I ended up really liking this mix with the rug.
I bought that Christmas tree from Altar’d State a couple years ago after Christmas for real cheap! They have amazing Christmas decor sold in January. It actually lights up too! It looks great without any ornaments and I stuck it inside a basket to hide the unattractive bottom stand.
I have plans on painting the staircase rails black too!
This room used to have peel and stick wallpaper on one wall and I removed all those and put them upstairs. I couldn’t part with them so I’m trying to decide if I can do anything with them. Lmk if you have any ideas.
Here’s a final look at the room.
