These simple gallery wall tips will give you the confidence to help you create a visual statement in your home.
I’ve been getting some questions on how to install a gallery wall so I thought I’d share a post with some tips if you want to create one in your home. I always carry around my small bag of tools that provide me with everything I need to install gallery walls for clients. I’ll share my favorite tools below to installing your frames. If you’re afraid of hanging your own, I hope these tips will give you a boost of confidence because I promise, it’s not that scary!
Tip 1: Find an inspiration photo
You can easily find one on pinterest, a blog or just online surfing. A photo will help give you an idea and plan for the space you’re thinking about. This corner in our family room in the above photo used to hold one of my all time favorite gallery walls. I loved the mix of my kids’ silhouettes, gifted artwork from talented friends and family, a vintage mirror and treasured photo. Gallery walls can be a mix of art work, photos or even mementos. There is no rule in how you create a gallery wall but there are some tips in putting one together.
Tip 2: Have a plan ready.
Place the arrangement of the frames on the ground or tape the wall. This will give you a general idea and visual of the display before placing them on the wall. Some people will also measure the frames and use painters tape on the wall to show a better layout. I don’t do this myself only because it takes too much time but it’s great for people who have a harder time envisioning the overall layout.
To create an easy, high impact gallery wall, choose the same frames. It creates a cohesive look and can be quite dramatic. Create a grid of 6, 8 or 9 frames like these I did for clients.
Tip 3: Have proper tools.
My favorite laser level is from Ryobi and it has a suction so it sticks to the wall while you can make marks.
Keep a pencil, measuring tape, painters tape, step ladder and picture frame hooks ready.
Tip 4: Measure, measure and measure again.
Gallery walls require precision and you need to make sure your measurements are perfect. This is where all your years so Math from grade school actually come in handy. Unless you like crooked frames, you need to make sure the measurements are done well. Don’t be a victim who suffers from CFS aka Crooked Frame Syndrome.
If you suffer from this syndrome check my Instagram highlight stories under Decorating Tips and I share a simple trick. Just roll some painters tape and place them on the back of your frames so they stop shifting. This applies to frames that have only one hook and not two.
Tip 5: Just do it!
So many people are afraid to put holes in their walls so they live with bare walls. My thinking is this. It’s just walls, people! You can patch them up and no one notices a few holes here and there.
Go ahead and display those precious family members and art work. You need not have any fear. I hope these tips show you that you can be confident installing your own gallery wall.
Do you think you can create your own? Yes, you can!
