I tweaked a few things to make better use of my small functional office wall
Last year, I gave my little office a nice makeover with some new furniture and decor. It had been working fine but I knew it could be better. After living in a space, you know the things you absolutely can not live without and the other items you can easily get rid of. I’ve worked in various parts of my home and apart from the screened porch, this is really my favorite spot in the house to get work done. See what I did to create a stylish yet small functional office wall.
Here’s what it looked like before. I hope this also shows you that you really only need a tiny sliver of a wall to create a personal desk space. I love being in the formal living room that has our piano and bay windows. I love all the natural light and it’s on the main floor so it’s easy access to everything.
I had two shelves that were stationed on my wall but I never used them. I never used them functionally and so they were there for more aesthetic purposes. You know I love stylish pieces but they also have to be practical especially for an office space. I decided it was time to remove them. I also wanted to reposition the leather mail holders. They are beautiful and totally functional but I didn’t like how I originally hung them. Don’t ask why I hung them like that.
I knew that if I removed all the shelves and leather pouches from the wall, there were probably going to be a ton of holes. Well, I was right! I had used a bunch of anchors and when taking them out, I took some chunks of drywall out too. But, it’s nothing that some drywall repair couldn’t repair. I was leaning on adding some grasscloth wallpaper but decided to just patch up the holes and repaint the wall using the same color as before. I can always add the wallpaper later!
Here’s me deciding between grasscloth or paint on my Instagram. I think the majority voted for grasscloth but I went with paint. Again, I can change my mind again later. That’s the wonderful thing with design. You have the freedom to change your mind!
A couple of years back when I visited Atlanta’s Mart during market, I met the owners of Petal Lane Home. They are a small business focused on creating beautiful signs, magnet boards and dry erase boards. I loved their products because they were simple, stylish, and totally my style. They asked if they could send me something so I had this custom magnet board created with my logo. It was really easy to create online and it came to my home quickly after ordering. This custom board arrived with 4 little round wooden magnets which perfectly fit the aesthetic of the board. I hung it up in the center but didn’t love how it looked there.
I hung it lower and to the right and added my leather pouches. Much better right?
I chose the custom natural magnet board in 24×32. It’s a generous size and it can be hung horizontally and comes in many sizes. I just added a couple of sawtooth hangers and hung them with picture hooks.
Now I have a place to put up inspiration photos, bills, or any papers that need my weekly attention.
Isn’t it so pretty? The leather pouches hold receipts, bills, and other documents that aren’t super immediate but still important. I also finally got a large monitor! I always work from my laptop but the big monitor and keyboard will help me with editing photos.
I picked up a few items from Target and they are perfect little additions. This acrylic letter tray is great for holding my laptop upright since it needs to be connected to my monitor while in use. This allows for maximum desk space and the cords are hidden in the back.
The cute wooden pencil holder also has an area where my phone can stand and the charger can run underneath it while hiding the cord. These two additions make my office desk cleaner and more functional. All I need now is a mouse pad!
I’m so happy how this turned out with just a few tweaks. I still love my swivel chair and desk. Jules is actually taking this desk by the end of the week as I’ve ordered a new one! She has been asking for a new desk since she’s been using an old console table and I think this will look even better in her space.
Is your office space working for you? Are there some tweaks you can make to better suit your needs?

Love this update because it shows how small tweaks can have a big impact. I work out of a small corner in my bedroom. This has inspired me to do a refresh of my own. 🥰
